Box Blades — Common Questions

What is a box blade used for?

Moving and redistributing material — building up a driveway or track, spreading metal or topsoil, and rough levelling. The enclosed sides and rear scarifier shanks (on models that have them) let it carry material rather than just push it, which a plain grader blade can't do.

Do I need the scarifier shanks/ripper teeth?

Shanks are useful for breaking up hard-packed ground or compacted driveways before you level them — if you're mostly redistributing already-loose material, you may not need them, but most box blades ship with them fitted or as an option.

What size box blade do I need?

Size to your tractor's horsepower and hitch category, not just the area you're covering — an oversized box blade on a small tractor will struggle to lift and won't track straight. See our Tractor Size Guide for hitch category and PTO horsepower guidance.

Can a box blade replace a grader blade?

For most driveway and track maintenance work, yes — a box blade can do rough grading as well as material moving. A dedicated grader blade is still better for fine, precise levelling and finishing passes.
