Overview

The Sierra PTO Post Hole Borer with Hydraulic Downforce is a tractor-mounted drilling attachment designed for digging post holes, planting trees, and general earthworks on farms and lifestyle blocks. Built for 30–100 HP tractors (best suited to 30 HP+) with PTO drive and hydraulic downforce for penetrating harder ground and clay soils. Features a shear bolt-protected 50 HP gearbox with 2" (50mm) output shaft compatible with most agricultural auger manufacturers. Reinforced 100mm x 100mm square steel tube boom with Category 1 and 2 lower linkage holes. Requires one double-acting hydraulic circuit for up/down control. Auger sold separately.

📖 Buying Guide: How to Choose a PTO Post Hole Borer for Your Tractor

PTO Post Hole Borers — Common Questions

What auger size do I need for fence posts?

For standard timber fence posts, a 6" to 9" auger is typical; for strainer posts or larger assemblies, 12" and up. Check your council or regional requirements too, as some areas specify minimum hole diameters for strainers.

Does the auger come with the borer, or is it separate?

On most of our post hole borer listings the auger is sold separately, so you can choose the exact diameter you need — check the individual product page, as this varies by model.

What PTO speed does a post hole borer need?

Post hole borers are gearbox-driven and typically rated for 540 RPM PTO input — check the product listing to confirm, and never run one above its rated speed, as it puts excessive load on the gearbox and auger.

Is a hydraulic down-force borer worth it over a standard one?

A hydraulic down-force borer pushes the auger into the ground under power rather than relying on the tractor's three-point linkage to push down, which makes a real difference in hard, dry or rocky ground. For soft or well-worked soil, a standard borer is usually enough.
